Become a Model & So, you would like to be a Model?
First, I would like to ask you, why do you want to become a model?
It is very important to identify and really understand the reasons why we want to do certain things. Probably you believe you know the reasons, but in the very depth of your inner self those reasons may be different. The actual reasons are of a very high importance as they push us and help us to reach our goals. In case your reasons are not pursuing and strong enough, maybe then you should think of something else you want to do. Why we do things is what gives us power to actually accomplish them especially when we face difficulties, and sooner or later we have to face them. But do not worry, after we have overcome those barriers it usually starts to get better. Plus failure is not a shame. Failure helps us to understand what is not working and shows us the right way to reach our goals. Nevertheless, you should be aware of the lessons failures teach you.
Why am I mentioning that? I believe many people have a false picture of how the modeling world looks like and that makes them wanting to join something that they do not fully understand.
Here is a list of a couple of reasons people often mention for wanting to become a model:
- I like all the glamour and fun
- I would love to travel the world and be taken care of
- Often I am told I look like a model
- People tell me I am good-looking/attractive
- I would like to be popular
- I want to earn money solely by my looks
- Everyone needs to see that I am pretty
- It seems to be an easy job
- People should realize that I can do it
- I am into fashion
Whether any of these reasons are good enough? Of course they are. Nevertheless, they are also quite superficial. And they will not help you to survive difficult times. Furthermore, a few of these reasons e.g. that it is glamourous and that it is an easy job are not always true. The model world does have its advantages but on the other side it is a tough job, physically challenging – many hours of posing without breaks – and also mentally – you will face many moments of rejection and you should never take them personally.
Whether I would have mentioned any of the above reasons? Sure, I did. In fact many people told me that I look like a model, so that was one of my main motivations. Nevertheless, since then I have adjusted my reasons, because only having this one in mind would not have helped me to go through difficult times.
Whether there is a better reason for wanting to become a model? Of course, wanting it should be something you mainly want to accomplish for yourself. In case one or more of the above mentioned reasons have to do with others – for example “I want to show person xy that I can do it”, “I love the idea that my family is proud of me”, “I want to be more popular than others”, “I want to belong to the rich and famous”, “I want others to look up to me”, “I want others to think that I am attractive/good looking” – then being a model will never truly fulfill you and you probably quit when things get difficult. Additionally, it is essential that you accept and love yourself just the way you are. Do not look for that acknowledgement from others. You need to love yourself to be happy. If you are not able to do so, it does not matter what you do, you will never be able to find happiness.
Therefore, the reasons why you want to become a model should be referring to yourself.
You should become a model if you feel true passion about doing so. If you still would like to model even without payment (I do not mean that models should not be paid, it is just a possibility to find out if it is something that would make you happy). If there is nothing else you can imagine doing except being a model. If you are willing to face difficulties and overcome them. If you have the feeling that you are meant to be a model. If you believe you could inspire people. If you have to think about it every day. If you wish to be a role model and help others. If you see fashion as a form of art. If there is no other job that could make you happy. And if your answer would still be “I want to become a model” regarding the question “What kind of job would you have in case you could not fail?”, and not any other job title like actor, artist, doctor, architect, chef, zoologist, racecar driver, painter, marine biologist, professor, nurse, professional athlete, astronaut etc. …
Well, you still want to become a model? Great, go for it!
